Director of Communications

The United Nations Association in Canada – Calgary Chapter (UNAC-Calgary) is seeking a Director of Communications to play a crucial role in our organization by keeping the public informed of UNAC-Calgary’s progress, share news and events, promote the image of the organization and its initiatives, and drive traffic to UNAC-Calgary’s events through a multimedia approach (blog, newsletter, web page, and social media platforms). The position requires a minimum 2 year commitment (max 6 years) and is an unpaid volunteer position.

At UNAC-Calgary, we believe in connecting Calgarians to the work of the United Nations, with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and how they are realized locally. We do this by promoting the work of the United Nations, funding local community initiatives, hosting and supporting special events. https://unaccal.com

Key areas of responsibility include:

• Support President in creating a volunteer Communications Committee to lead UNAC-Calgary marketing, promotions, and outreach
• Adopting communication strategies to drive traffic to UNAC-Calgary events, and engage the public in conversation
• Contributing to public relations activities such as writing news releases, newsletters, and feature stories
• Ensuring regular dissemination of campaign messages through online and print media
• Developing creative concepts for multimedia approach to promote organization
• Act as an advocate and ambassador for UNAC-Calgary and the SDGs
• Able and willing to work with fellow board members to fulfill the obligations of the board
• Regularly attend and actively participate in monthly board and/or committee meetings
• Commit to a minimum 2-year term on the board of directors

Desired qualifications:

• Marketing, communications  and public relations experience
• Time management, leadership, organizational, and creative thinking skills
• Strong editing and writing skills with ability to capture our community’s attention
• Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
• Experience leading and working with volunteers
• Effective written and verbal communication
• Knowledge of the United Nations, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals

Time Commitment: 10-15 hours a month
